Behaviours for learning and wellbeing | Wednesday 29 August 2018 Speaker: Dr Justin Coulson Emcee: Jodie Benveniste Jodie Benveniste: Welcome, everybody. We've still got some people coming into the room. Grab your cups of tea and coffee and join us. Hello, everyone, my name is Jodie Benveniste. I'm a psychologist and parenting author and I'm very pleased to be here with you tonight for the second evening in our parenting education week. We have a great audience here in our room, we have people at home watching the live cast and also in our venues around the state. It's great to have all of you here. I just wanted to begin by acknowledging that this land that we meet on today is the traditional lands of the Kaurna people and we respect their spiritual relationship with their country. We also acknowledge the Kaurna people as the custodians of the Adelaide region and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today. We also pay our respects to the cultural authority of Aboriginal people visiting attending from other areas of South Australia or Australia who are here present this evening. Welcome, everyone. We had such a fantastic session last night on living positively in a digital world. Lots of great strategies shared a few scary statistics but also some great ways to actually engage positively with our kids and technology. Tonight is going to be another amazing session. We have Dr. Justin Coulson here. I'll introduce him in a moment. We're going to be focusing on behaviours for learning and well-being. A couple of housekeeping matters. There are bathrooms at the back for those of us who are here. The emergency exit is out this way and also out this way, and if there is an emergency we'll meet at the front by the ticket office at the front. Tonight is about hearing from our expert speaker but it is also about hearing from you. Last night we used a bit of technology called Slido and we would like to do the same tonight. You're allowed to all take out your phones now and log onto the Wi-Fi here. If you're at a venue I think your hosts will point you towards the Wi-Fi. If you're at home I'm sure you know what you're doing. Once you are logged on to the Wi-Fi what you need to do is open a browser and go to slido.com, S-L-I-D-O.com, and add in the event code. Our event code for tonight is #P-I-E-W-K-justin. That's going to take us to our own little unique space on Slido and what we would invite you to do is as you're listening along tonight and you have any questions, any comments, anything you'd like to add to the discussion just tap them into Slido and we'll be compiling them and we will get to as many questions as 1 we can throughout the evening. If we don't get to all of them there is an opportunity to address some of those questions at another time. There are also going to be a couple of polls that we're going to have throughout the night so we're just going to test out the technology now. Here's a little poll for you: Which best describes where you live? Just choose one of those then we'll see. North, south and regional well-represented, excellent. It's really is easy to use them and I encourage you to use it tonight to be part of the discussion. I'd like to introduce Dr. Justin Coulson now. He is one of Australia's leading parenting experts. Justin and his wife Kylie have six daughters, count them, six daughters. He's the author of three best-selling parenting books and his parenting books are at the back of the room there. If you didn't see them on the way in you might like to have a look on your way out. He's earned his PhD in Psychology. He appears regularly on TV and radio and writes a weekly parenting column for news core. I'm now going to hand over to Justin to talk about behaviours for learning and well-being. Welcome, Justin. Dr Justin Coulson: Thanks, Jodie. Hi, everybody, hello. Really nice to be with you tonight. I hope that I can honour your time and share some useful things with you. I've got a slideshow prepared for tonight but, frankly, I don't really care whether we get through the slides or not. I've got a bunch of things that I think are valuable but there may be some questions that you have that I haven't thought of. Jodie and the rest of the team I've got to say such a big thank you to the team who have been involved in putting this on, Malena and Dee, in particular just a great team and a great venue and a great opportunity to be here. They're
