Those present were Secretary Tammy Kriegel, Treasurer Kathy Minnaert, Board Members – Chris Hurst, Bob Lacina, Bonnie Mills and Library Director Josh Gerard. Absent Carla Kriegel and Matt Maschmann. Vice President Chris Hurst called the meeting to order at 5:05 pm. Minutes were read. Motion by Kathy, 2nd Bonnie to approve the September 7, 2021 minutes. All ayes, Motion carried. All ayes, Motion carried. UNFINISHED BUSINESS ARPA Grant – As a Grant stipulation the tablets for the children’s area need to be locked down. It was decided to lock them to the table they will be sitting on. Board Training – Board training is on hold for now as the State Library is revamping their website. NEW BUSINESS Collections Clarification – The board decided if a minor has outstanding books at the library the whole family will not be able to check out books, use the computers, etc. until the books are returned. This pertains to family members who live at the same address. LIBRARY DIRECTORS REPORT Story Time is back in full force with lots of new faces. It is every Wednesday morning beginning at 9:30am. Murder Mystery – The BGM After Prom Committee is sponsoring a Murder Mystery that will run the month of October. So far 70 people have signed up. Friends of the Library – Friends have offered to buy 3 smaller efficient computer desks with power strips. The old desks will be sold. They also purchased Halloween Candy for a fun day on Friday, October 29th. October Book Club will host author Karen Carr – On Thursday, October 7th the Montezuma Book Club will be joining us to welcome Karen Carr. (Karen Carr was born and raised in northwestern Iowa, was a partner in a family farm, and moved to Mason City where she worked at Mercy Medical Center for 32 years. She is now retired, lives in Mason City, and enjoys spending time with her four grandchildren, going to book signings and other author events. Her most recent work has been a 4-book historical Christian fiction series called The Safe Haven Series). Banned Book Display - Banned Books Week is an annual awareness campaign promoted by the American Library Association and Amnesty International, that celebrates the freedom to read, draws attention to banned and challenged books, and highlights persecuted individuals. Josh set up a banned book display and it is the most popular display to date. Come check it out. Partnering with Heartland Co-op – Rusty Clayton had the idea to partner with Heartland Co-op to see if farmers would donate bushels of corn to the library when harvesting. If this is successful the money will be used to buy more efficient shelving. The more efficient shelving we can add, frees up space to add more computers, etc. The next meeting will be Monday, November 1 at 5:00 pm.
